Not-so-Misery Island
One fine afternoon, my pal Marissa and I asked her kind neighbor Margie if we could borrow her kayaks. We were up for an adventure, but we had no idea that we were about to come across a new favorite location on the North Shore. We took off in our boats toward a vacant island we were hoping to cultivate for future camping excursions. When we found that the island (pictured behind the kayak in the picture below) was extremely difficult to navigate due to dense vegetation, we decided to cross the Atlantic to the next closest island.
We pulled into the harbor to find dozens of boats anchored enjoying the quiet cove. After beaching our boats, we come across a sign reading "Misery Island". This is another piece of land owned by the Trustees. According to legend, this island is named for the number of failed businesses that attempted to flourish on this adorable island (casinos, hotels, etc.). There are ancient remains of stone buildings around the island. Misery Island was much more explorable since it was well-groomed by the Trustees. There is a cute little pond, public restrooms and paths leading to all parts of the island. The path Marissa and I took led us to the undulating hills of a grassy meadow. Not much further is a beach with beautiful shells and soft sand. After hanging out for the day we kayaked to shore through the turbulence of speed boats also returning home after a day on the ocean. We will definitely be returning to this island off the coast of Manchester. When we do, the dogs will be coming with us- the island is accommodating to adventurous pets (obviously a huge factor in determining the best spots on the North Shore). Hope you make it here some time!
